God's Nature: The Basis of Atonement

Lesson 1

October 4, 2008
KEY THOUGHT: God wants to recreate new creatures in this sin damaged world. God’s work of salvation is a self-willed outflow of His very nature.
1. Have a volunteer read I John 4:8-11.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. What does propitiation mean? How does God’s love bring this about?
C. Personal Application: How do you love people and show your love for God? What kind of love is John talking about here?
D. Case Study : One of your relatives states, “Everynody loves somebody or something. So everyone knows God. He is in all of us, otherwise we wouldn’t have the capacity to love.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Psalm 100:3.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Why are we considered sheep of His pasture? What ideas come to mind when you are imaged as a sheep?
C. Personal Application: Is there such a thing as evolutionary Creation? What shows in this passage that this is not applicable or possible?
D. Case Study : One of your friends states, “My dad used to say ‘I brought you into this world, and I can take you out.’ Biologically speaking, my parents made me. Where is the scientific evidence of man’s Creation?” How would you respond to your friend
3. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 40:25, 57:15.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. What does it mean to be holy? Can anyone or anything be holy if it is not connected to God?
C. Personal Application : Do you consider yourself to be holy? Paul tells us to be holy as He (God) is holy. How can we be holy?
D. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “Only God is holy. Nobody can be holy, only forgiven. We are sinners, so we can’t be holy. I’ve seen churches tell people they are holy that did really bad things and not feel guilty about it. Since they are holy, what they do must be okay. This is a deception.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Psalm 139:1-4.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Does God having foreknowledge mean that He preordains things?
C. Personal Application : Do you think that the Bible indicates that some choices people made may disappoint, surprise, or impress God? Share your thoughts.
D. Case Study : Think of someone you know that needs to hear a message from this week’s lessons. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
