Following the Master: Discipleship in Action

Lesson 9

March 1, 2008
KEY THOUGHT: We need faith works through love in bringing others to Jesus.
1. Have a volunteer read Mark 8:35-38.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. Is this passage encouraging Christians to fight and die for justice in the world? To protect their country?
C. Personal Application: We probably have never denied Christ verbally but are there ways in which we have denied Him in our lives and interactions with others? Share.
D. D. Case Study : One of your relatives states, “What’s different about the Christian’s view of dying for their God than the Muslim extremist, the native American Indian, the Hindu, or the Buddhist’s dying for their god?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Luke 5:17-20.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. What the friends did was illegal and disrespectful to the homeowner. Are we supposed to break man’s laws of social order to bring people to Christ?
B. Personal Application: Have you done anything out of the ordinary even to extremes to try and bring someone to Christ? Share.
C. Case Study : One of your friends states, “People don’t care about each other like that anymore. They are only concerned about themselves. Nobody goes out of their way to help others anymore.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Matthew 10:34-37.
B. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
C. Why does Jesus contradict Himself by saying in one place He gives us peace and in this place that He doesn’t come to bring peace? Is this a paradox? What does He mean?
D. Personal Application : How has becoming an Adventist Christian brought strife instead of peace in your family?
E. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “I thought God instituted the family and uses it to explain God’s love to mankind. How can He say we should love Him more than our relatives?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Matthew 28:18-20.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Our sole purpose is to go, teach, and baptize. How many in the church are actively involved in doing what God has commanded His disciples?
C. Personal Application : When was the last time you “went” and taught anyone about God’s word in Bible studies and preparation for baptism?
D. Think of one person who needs to hear this message. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
