Lesson 8

February 23, 2008
KEY THOUGHT: As disciples, we need to experientially know Christ, have Him in our hearts, and feed on His word..
1. Have a volunteer read Mark 8:34,35.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. How do we take up a cross by following Jesus? What does taking up our cross mean?
C. Personal Application: Have you denied yourself anything by being a Christian? Are we expected to deny ourselves more than we have already? Share.
D. D. Case Study : One of your relatives states, “I have a good life. God has blessed me richly. Everything is good. Why would I want to lose that? People are persecuting me for being a Christian now. So why would we take this to apply to us today? We don’t live in the times of the apostles anymore.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Matthew 18:1-4.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. What does being humble mean in this passage as it relates to a little child? How is a little child humble?
C. Personal Application: How easy is it to humble yourself? Is there a time in your life where God has humbled you? Share.
D. Case Study : One of your friends states, “We shouldn’t be like little children because they aren’t wise, they don’t have any depth of understanding, and they are easily led astray. So why should we be like a child to be a Christian? There are many cults out there ready to take advantage of the gullible.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Matthew 24:4-14.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Does the preaching of the gospel bring the time of trouble, or does the troublous times spur the preaching of the gospel?
C. Personal Application : What do the signs of war, famines, diseases, and earthquakes today indicate to you about the nearness of Jesus’ return?
D. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “I don’t know if I can handle being hated and presented by everyone. Do you really think that will happen today, or was that just for the disciple’s sake?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Matthew 10-13.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. When asked if he was Elijah, John said no. Yet Jesus called John Elijah. So how does this work out?
C. (Note: John was not a reincarnated Elijah, but he had the same message.)
D. Personal Application : Do you think of yourself as a John the Baptist or an Elijah with an urgent message to give to prepare people for the Lord’s soon return?.
E. Think of one person who needs to hear this message. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
