Ethnicity and Discipleship

Lesson 6

February 9, 2008

KEY THOUGHT:  The call and challenge of discipleship embraces all people in all lands of all races and backgrounds.

  1. Have a volunteer read Luke 7:1-11.
  1. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
  2. What is a God-fearer? Why did Jesus accept their faith as genuine where many of the Jews were not accepted?
  3. Personal Application:  How do you feel about Sabbath-keepers that aren’t Adventists? World-wide Church of God? Seventh-day Baptists? Seventh-day Pentacostals? Have you encountered any? How did the encounter turn out?
  4. D. Case Study :  One of your relatives states, “God doesn’t hear the prayers of those who don’t keep His commandments. All those healings for those TV preachers and Sunday-keeping denominations are a fraud. God doesn’t bless them because of their disloyalty to the Sabbath.” How would you respond to your relative
  1. Have a volunteer read Matthew 15:21-28.
    1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
    2. Why did Jesus discourage the woman at first by His response to her request in the manner He did?
    3. Personal Application: Have you ever thought that someone was so far gone that there was no help for them no matter how much they wanted it? Share.
    4. Case Study :  One of your friends states, “There is no sense in trying to help the Muslims. They are so radically far off in knowing God’s true nature and will that it is dangerous and hopeless to try and reach these murderous zealots.” How do you respond to your friend?

  2. Have a volunteer read Acts 8:26-40.
    1. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
    2. Have you ever been led by the Spirit or “circumstances” into a position where you were able to share your faith and the gospel with another person? Share.
    3. Personal Application : Have you ever been able to share the truths of the Bible with someone of another culture or race? Were there any difficulties to overcome? Share.
    4. Case Study :  One of your neighbors states, “Why did Phillip baptize the Eunich right away? Shouldn’t there be a full Bible study and proof or evidence of conversion before he was baptized? What is different today than then?” How would you respond to your neighbor?

  1. Have a volunteer read Acts 11:25-30.
    1. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
    2. Why were the Gentile Christians in Antioch so willing and determined to send relief to the Jewish brethren in Judea even though the Jews were antagonistic to Gentile converts at times?
    3. Personal Application : Have you ever been in a position to help someone who has been antagonistic against you for any reason? How did it affect your willingness and desire to help them?
    4. Think of one person who needs to hear this message. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them

(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
