Lesson 4

January 26, 2007
Key Thought : People make decisions that can impact their lives for good or bad for all eternity.
1. Have a volunteer read Luke 9:59-62.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. What does it mean by “looking back”? Is taking care of family matters a matter of looking back or is there more involved here?
C. Personal Application: Has your relationship with your family changed any since becoming an Adventist Christian? Have you altered your interactions with them because of it? Share.
D. D. Case Study : One of your relatives states, “What is wrong with a person wanting to bury his father before following Jesus? Wasn’t Jesus being insensitive here in not allowing him to bury his father first? This seems drastic to me.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Matthew 8:19,20.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Why did Jesus respond to the scribe in the way that he did after hearing his statement?
(Note: There are some indications that this was Judas. He was willing to follow Jesus for material blessings and gain.)
C. Personal Application: Did you receive any material blessings or gain by becoming a Christian? Share.
D. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Why would Jesus discourage a scribe from being willing to follow Him and become a disciple? Are there some people who claim to become Christians for earthly advantage or gain? Would Christ ask us to discourage some people from becoming Christians or work actively for them?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Mark 10:17-23.
C. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
D. Why are riches such a stumbling block for so many people? What other “things” might people have a hard time giving up to follow and obey Jesus?
E. Personal Application :Have you lost or given up a job, money, or influence to follow Christ? Share.
F. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “This seems to say that a person has to give up all their money and give it away to be a good Christian. Does that mean that the rich in the church are being greedy and deceiving themselves about their real responsibility and relationship with Christ?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read John 3:19-21.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Why do people cling to things against decency, purity, and God’s will rather than change and follow Christ’s path?
C. Personal Application : What things of darkness are the most prevalent today that people have a hard time giving up?
D. Think of one person who needs to hear this message. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not imparted, that is not lived, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
