Patterns of Discipleship

Lesson 13

March 29, 2008
KEY THOUGHT: Jesus was moved with compassion in dealing with the struggles of others. To be a disciple means to live with the same compassion.
1. Have a volunteer read Matthew 10:8.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. Why is this a part of Jesus’ commission? What does healing, cleansing, and raising have to do with preaching the gospel? Are we supposed to seek after signs?
C. Personal Application: How much power to heal, cleanse, and raise have you received? Is this a part of God’s commission to us?
D. D. Case Study : One of your relatives states, “Are God’s people supposed to be able to heal, raise the dead, and cleanse lepers? Why aren’t these things done today? Did these miracles die with the apostles?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Luke 16:19-31.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Do you think enjoying riches here means not receiving the riches of God in the world to come because of a lack of compassion on those less fortunate?
B. Personal Application: How much is enough to take care of yourself, and how much can be shared with others? Do they need to come to us, or should we be searching for the poor to help them?
C. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Too many rich people are only concerned about their money and not helping others. Go to a poor area to ask for help and they give, go to an affluent neighborhood, and they are reluctant to give anything.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Acts 20:28,29.
B. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
C. How are we to feed the flock of God to keep them from being deceived by wolves in sheep’s clothing?
D. Personal Application : Have you ever been introduced to false doctrine that sounded right, but was deceptive and led away from the truth? Share.
E. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “Why are you Adventists always trying to get Bible studies started with other Christians when they already know Jesus and the Word?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Luke 5:15,16.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. How important is it to pray for those we share the truth with? How do you pray for them?
C. Personal Application : Do you have a prayer list that you pray for? How earnestly and often do you pray for your interests, relatives, and friends? Share.
D. Think of one person who needs to hear this message. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
