Mission and Commission

Lesson 12

March 22, 2008
KEY THOUGHT: We should make every effort to make the Great Commission our own through prayer, action, and study.
1. Have a volunteer read Matthew 25:35-40.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. What is the major reason or purpose for helping people in need? Why does Jesus identify Himself with them?
C. Personal Application: How much do you go out of your way to help people in need? Could you do better? Share with the class one practical way you could help the hungry, poor, needy, or incarcerated more.
D. D. Case Study : One of your relatives states, “I thought this had a spiritual application. That clothing the naked was covering people with Christ’s robe of righteousness, feeding them with the Word of God, slaking thirst with the waters of life, prisoners in the prison house of sin – set free by the gospel. I think too many are involved in a social gospel rather than a spiritual one. Jesus said we would have the poor with us always.” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Revelation 14:6,7.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. What does it mean to fear God and glorify Him at the same time?
(Note: Psalms 111:10, Eccl. 12:13. Fear is an awesome respect that leads us to obedience to His commands)
C. Personal Application: Since judgment began in 1844, how effective has our message been in telling the world the end is near and to worship the Creator? Share.
D. Case Study : One of your friends states, “Who is this angel that covers the world? And why does He tell everyone to glorify God by worshipping the One who created everything? How do we do that?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Luke 24:46-49.
C. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
D.
Why did Jesus tell His disciples to wait in
E. Personal Application : Do we wait and pray for God’s power and wisdom before we go to preach the gospel, or do we go first and pray as we go?
F. Case Study : One of your neighbors states, “Are we supposed to be focusing on leading people to obey Christ or receive forgiveness for their sins? What is the focus of the great commission?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Mark 16:14-20.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Why don’t we see devils cast out, healing from poison, and tongue-speaking as we share the gospel today? Was this just for the apostles?
C. Personal Application : How do we increase our faith to be able to share God’s Word and have His Spirit bring signs following?
D. Think of one person who needs to hear this message. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
