The Jobs: Living With Losses

Lesson 9

September 1, 2007

Key Thought :  The story of Job and his wife reveals early on the reality of sorrow and suffering here on earth.

   1.  Have a volunteer read Job 1:1 - 2:8.

A.     Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     What made Job different than all the other people on earth? Weren’t there others that feared God and turned away from evil?

C.      Personal Application : How often, earnestly, and fervently do you pray for your family members for their salvation?.

D.     Case Study:  One of your relatives states, “Why did God pick out Job to mention to Satan when they were in conversation in heaven? Wasn’t Job a rich man? Why didn’t God pick out a poor person?” How would you respond to your relative?

         2.   Have a volunteer read Job 2:9.

               A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text        is.

B.     Job’s wife was negative toward God because of their situation. Is it normal to blame God when things go wrong?  How can we prevent ourselves from doing the same?

C.     Personal Application :What are some ways we can keep our spouses and children close to God and on the same page in spiritual matters?

D.     Case Study :  One of your friends states, “Did Job’s wife want him to die? Or was she just being sarcastic because Job didn’t seem to be overwhelmed by his dilemma?” How would you respond to your friend?

3.      Have a volunteer read Job 1:7-11, 2:3-5.

A.     Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     Why did God allow Satan to harass Job and cause him so much trouble if he were a God-fearing man?

C.     Personal Application :  Do you think God allows us to be tested as well? What if we fail the test or give in to temptation? Does grace put us in the same status as Job?

D.     Case Study:  One of your neighbors states, “Does Satan really own the earth because of our disobedience? Are we all born children of the devil (Ephesians 2:2)? Sounds strange to me.”  How would you respond to your neighbor?

4.      Have a volunteer read Job 2:10.

A.     Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     When we complain about how tough things are, is that a sin according to Job?

C.     Personal Application :How does your complaint count match up to your praise count? Should we look for the good things and not focus or linger on the negative?

D.     Think of someone who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell that class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Note: “Truth that is not imparted, that is not lived, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
