Sampson

Lesson 6

August 11, 2007
1. Key Thought : Sampson was a man of great gifts and calling. His poor relationship choices based on infatuation and lust interfered with God’s plan for him.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Did the Lord bless Sampson in part because his parents followed the dietary plan the angel gave them? Do you think they ordered Sampson’s habits after their own?
C. Personal Application : How important is it that you eat according to what God has revealed in His word? What blessings follow our obedience to His direction? Are spiritual blessings included?
D. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “God called Sampson before he was born to do a special work. He hasn’t blessed us to do any great thing. We are just one of the masses of normal people. So why should we be concerned about special diets for special people?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Judges 14:1-4.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. How much of “love” is based on looks and sensuality? How can you help people deal with the realities of married life?
C. Personal Application : Do you think parents ought to have any influence on who their children marry? Share your thoughts.
D. Case Study : One of your friends states, “What’s wrong with marrying a non-Adventist? You can always convert them and a lot of the really good looking people aren’t Adventist.” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Judges 15:1-6.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Why did Sampson go back to his Philistine wife? Did his impulsive actions have good reason? Was God using him here to destroy the Philistines?
C. Personal Application : Does being in a marriage that is across religious, cultural, or racial lines sometimes get influenced by the outside forces of religion, culture, or race to separate or divide the parties or their children in some ways?
D. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “I think it’s wrong to marry outside your race, culture, or religion. If for no other reason than it will cause trouble for your family and your children. It just causes more confusion.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Judges 16:5-20.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. Why would Sampson test Delilah so many times, seeing she was trying to trick him; and yet he continued to tell her the truth about his strength?
C. Personal Application : Was Sampson being presumptuous about his strength and his connection with God? Why did God wait so long before removing his strength? Was his strength really in his hair? Explain.
D. Think of someone who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell that class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note: “Truth that is not imparted, that is not lived, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
